TUSD Governing Board votes to renew district superintendent's contract

The Tucson Unified School District Governing Board voted Tuesday to renew the contract of Superintendent Dr. John Pedicone, extending his contract through June of 2014.
Board President Miguel Cuevas, and members Adelita Grijalva and Alexandre Sugiyama voted in favor of contract renewal, board member Mark Stegeman voted against it, and board member Michael Hicks abstained from voting. "Superintendent Pedicone's leadership and vision have improved academic and operational effectiveness throughout the district," says Cuevas. "His direction has brought the district advancements in student achievement, technology, and transportation, and he will continue to guide TUSD on the path to success."
Pedicone has led the emerging transformation of the district, overseeing a renewed and improved transportation system, technology upgrades and the replacement of outdated computers, substantial upward movement in school labels, the development of a new vision for action and core values for the district, and significant improvements in student achievement, among other accomplishments.
The board also voted to award the superintendent performance pay in the amount of $35,248, based on an evaluation of achievement of his goals, including the reduction of the number of schools with "D" labels, increases in student enrollment, and improved customer service.
Pedicone says he will donate the bonus to the Educational Enrichment Foundation (EEF) to create a fund to recognize students who demonstrate leadership skills and a sense of service. EEF is a nonprofit organization that supports students and teachers within Tucson Unified School District.
"I look forward to being able to support students who display qualities that we value in young people," says Pedicone.
As superintendent, Pedicone administers academics and operations for the district – overseeing more than 50,000 students and nearly 8,700 employees. He has held the position since January 2011.
