Come celebrate the 45th birthday of the picturesque Cooper Center for Environmental Learning — an educational oasis known to many as Camp Cooper. The center, located at 5403 W. Trails End Road, is marking the event with an open house for educators, outdoor leaders, families, and desert lovers on Saturday, March 27, 2010, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

"Families, former students, visitors, our long-time TUSD participants, plus educators from all the districts in and around Tucson will get to enjoy experiences with hawks, falcons, and other desert animals, composting, solar power, water harvesting, and much more," said Mike Mayer, director of the center. "We'll even have fruit smoothies mixed by a bike-powered blender, a special performance for families of selected poems by Francisco Alarcón by the UA School of Theatre Arts as part of its Stories on Stage 2010, and, of course, birthday cake."

Tours of the facility will be available and visitors can also participate in educational activities offered by the Cooper Center to meet the "Connector Inspector," become trained Cooper Sonoran Investigators (CSI) or follow a special nature lover's diary through the desert.

Located in the foothills of the Tucson Mountains, the center is now a partnership between the University of Arizona's College of Education and the Tucson Unified School District. The facility is available for use by all schools districts and interested organizations in Southern Arizona.

Casual dress and comfortable walking shoes are recommended for the day.
