First Superintendent's Cup to be awarded to TUSD's top high school athletic program at May 14 inaugural event

Tucson Unified School District's best high school varsity athletic programs will be in the spotlight at the first-ever Superintendent's Cup award ceremony, May 14 at 6 p.m. in the auditorium at Catalina Magnet High School, 3645 E. Pima St.

The Superintendent's Cup reflects the highest standard of achievement for a TUSD school's athletic program. The cup will be awarded based on a set of criteria that include accrued point totals in:

  • State tournament participation and results
  • School teams' grade point average
  • Pursuing Victory with Honor - TUSD's sportsmanship program
  • Individual and team post-season awards

A school's athletic program consists of many sports from each season. Sports that are part of this assessment of a school's program include:

  • Fall sports - football, girls' volleyball, golf, cross-country, swimming
  • Winter sports - basketball, soccer, wrestling
  • Spring sports -tennis, baseball, softball, track & field, and boys' volleyball

"The Superintendent's Cup is an award that recognizes team success based on competitive results, overall student scholarship, and sportsmanship with honor," says TUSD Superintendent Dr. John Pedicone. "It is a pleasure to be able to present this award to students and coaches who exemplify the positive power of athletic engagement in the lives of our young people."

Four high schools are finalists for the inaugural Superintendent's Cup - Catalina, Palo Verde, Sabino, and Sahuaro. The school that receives the cup will have the right to display it - and have bragging rights - for the upcoming school year. The trophy will travel to and be on display at the high school that is awarded the honor each year.

Launching the award was the idea of TUSD's Director of Interscholastics Herman House and Assistant Superintendent for High Schools Dr. Abel Morado, who were establishing goals for the program.

"TUSD's athletics programs are an enduring source of pride for our student athletes, parents and our communities," says House. "The Superintendent's Cup was created to promote the academic, athletic and personal achievements of our student athletes and their schools."

In addition to celebrating the school with the top athletic program, the top female and male athletes from every high school will honored. The selected students were judged based on highest grade point average, years of participation in school sports, and their individual post season awards and honors.

Other awards that will be presented include the Reach Higher Award, which will recognize a student from each school who has overcome adversity in their lives to complete a season with their athletic team.
