The Tucson Unified School District Governing Board approved the district’s expenditure budget for fiscal year 2013 in a special meeting held July 14, which included a public hearing.
The board voted 4-1 in favor of approving the budget. Dr. Mark Stegeman voted against it.
“We worked very hard to balance the budget,” says Yousef Awwad, TUSD’s Chief Financial Officer. “The budget addressed and established an important foundation to move the district forward. The foundation was established using zero-based budgeting to create school site budgets based on standards that support student achievement.”
The district’s $325.2 million budget includes the establishment of a Post Retirement Employment Option program (PREO), a strengthened fine arts program for schools across the district, and a technology infrastructure project.
“The budget addresses the district’s outdated technology infrastructure and moves the district to a more developed and modern infrastructure that will enable the district to pursue automated, more efficient and effective systems,” says Awwad.
