Parent Notification Letters for schools in school improvement

In July 2012, Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction John Huppenthal announced the release of
AZ LEARN's 2011-2012 A-F letter grades for all district and charter schools in the state to help parents understand how our schools are performing academically. AZ LEARNS is legislation which supports the school district's efforts to provide a strong standards-based educational program for students along with accountability for student achievement.

As a district, TUSD made significant progress in student achievement as reflected in the 2011-2012 school labels released by the Arizona Department of Education. (For more information, read the press release.)

However, twelve schools have been identified for school improvement. In addition, one school, Agave Distance Learning, received a federal label of Priority, and ten schools have received a federal label of Focus. Letters have been sent to the parents/guardians of students at these schools, notifying them that their school has been identified for school improvement or has received a Focus or Priority label.

Each of these schools has been working with the district and the Arizona Department of Education (ADE) to revise their Continuous Improvement Plans. The plans include strategies to address the reasons for being identified in school improvement. These plans also state that:

  • All teachers at these schools will participate in professional development in mathematics and reading instruction.
  • Interventions will be implemented to assist students in these schools in mastery of state standards in mathematics and reading.
  • Student data and progress will be monitored regularly throughout the school year to ensure mastery of state standards.
  • Parent involvement strategies will be implemented to strengthen the partnership between home and school to improve student achievement.     

If your child attends one of these schools, we encourage you to become involved by participating in the development of the school's Continuous Improvement Plan.  Please contact your school principal if you are interested in being part of a committee or would like more information about the school.
