How to Become a Substitute Teacher

ATTENTION SUBSTITUTE TEACHER APPLICANTS: Effective 2/2/2011, all Substitute Teacher applications received will be held for the 2011-2012 School Year. If you are selected to attend an orientation, you will be notified by the Substitute Office with an orientation date beginning in August 2011. All applications are processed in the order they are received.

Minimum Requirements:

The required minimum qualification to become a substitute teacher is a current stamped and recorded Arizona Substitute or Teaching Certificate. See www.azed.gov/educator-certification/ or contact the Arizona State Board of Education at (520) 628-6326 for information on applying for a teaching or substitute certificate. We also require attendance at an orientation.

How to apply to Substitute Teach:

  1. Submit a Substitute Teacher Application
  2. Submit a Pima County stamped and recorded Substitute or Teaching certificate. (If you currently do not hold a certificate, see www.azed.gov/educator-certification/ for information on how to apply for a certificate.)
  3. Provide a copy of your current IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card
  4. Provide on the application at least three names and phone numbers of past professional recommendation from current or past employers, must be within the last five years.
  5. Provide evidence of teaching experience on application.
  6. If selected, you will be scheduled for an orientation. You must attend before working as a substitute teacher.
  7. Bring an original social security card and a picture I.D. and immunization records to orientation. TUSD cannot hire anyone without an original social security card. If you do not have original social security card, bring in the receipt that the Social Security Department issues for social security card application.

Your application and all attached Documents become the official records of TUSD and cannot be returned. Please copy your records prior to submitting.

Changes to current information:

You are responsible for assuring that any name, address or telephone number changes are received in the Substitute Office.

Record of Arrest or Conviction

Having a record of arrest or conviction will not necessarily disqualify you from employment. However, a false or incomplete answer may result in rejection of your application or dismissal from employment. Fingerprints will be checked through the Arizona Department of Public Safety and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The Conviction report page of this application must be completed, dated and signed with original signature.

Before Placement you will be required to:

  1. Prove your identity and eligibility to work in the United States (I-9 Document).
  2. If born after January 1, 1957, provide documentation of measles immunization.
  3. If born after January 1, 1942 provide documentation of rubella (German Measles) immunization.
  4. Complete the ARS 15-512 Conviction Affidavit form.
  5. Comply with any and all other federal and state law requirements.
  6. Provide a social security card for payroll documentation.
