Short-Term Disability

Short-term disability (STD) insurance is an optional benefit offered through the district; it is a private insurance that the employee pays. It is a separate consideration from any type of leave. Employees who are paying the premiums for this insurance should consider submitting the STD Claim Forms to the insurance company. If the doctor verifies the need to be absent, the STD insurance company should continue to pay the employee for up to six months.

If you have selected short-term disability through your employee benefits, you can apply for short-term disability. The plan you are enrolled in determines the waiting period before benefits are paid:

*0/3 Plan

0 Day Wait for Injury/Accident;
Benefits begin on 1st day

3 Day Wait for Illness;
Benefits begin on 4th day

7/14 Plan

7 Day Wait for Injury/Accident;
Benefits begin on 8th day

14 Day Wait for Illness;
Benefits begin on 15th day

14/21 Plan

14 Day Wait for Injury/Accident;
Benefits begin on 15th day

21 Day Wait for Illness;
Benefits begin on 22nd day

*Not open to new enrollees

All benefits-eligible employees are also eligible for Long Term Disability (LTD) through Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) which can start at six (6) months of being absent if the claim is approved. A separate LTD claims form must be filed, preferably well before the six months of being absent. ASRS uses a third party administrator to manage the Long Term Disability program. If approved for LTD, employees accrue points towards retirement.

Information about both of these programs is available by appointment with the TUSD Benefits office/Leave of Absence Coordinator.
