Regarding the Incident at the April 26, 2011, Special Governing Board Meeting

April 28, 2011

By now, I am sure everyone is aware of the incident that occurred Tuesday evening at a time when a board meeting was scheduled at 1010 E. 10th Street.  A group of students and adults planned and executed an action which resulted in the board dais being overtaken and occupied, causing the Governing Board to cancel its regularly scheduled meeting.  It is the position of school administration that this was an unlawful act which interfered with the effective operation of the school district.  While students and community members have the right of free speech, they do not have the right to interfere with or impede the operation of the district, especially as it applies to the governance function.

As a result, videos of the incident are being reviewed by district personnel and law enforcement to determine if there is a violation of the law and whether prosecution is warranted.  After the investigation is completed, the District will determine what action should be taken. This type of behavior will not be tolerated.  Precautions will be taken to prevent any recurrence of this type of incident in the future and will include enhanced safety and security procedures.

The public must feel confident that TUSD believes in the importance of ensuring school district operations are being handled effectively and that, in all cases, a professional and orderly environment will be maintained.
