School Groups

To increase diversity through open enrollment, magnet schools, and magnet programs, TUSD schools are organized into three groups (A, B, and C) based on the following demographic and achievement characteristics:

  • the percentage of minority students
  • the socioeconomic status of students as measured by participation in the Federal Free and Reduced-price Meal Programs
  • the number of students whose Primary Home Language Is Other Than English
  • Schoolwide academic achievement as measured by results of the AIMS test

Schools with similar characteristics are grouped together for determining priority of entrance in magnet schools and for open enrollment.

Open enrollment students accepted to schools in a different school group than the group in which they reside will be eligible for transportation, providing they meet the following qualifications from Policy EEA, Student Transportation in School Buses:

  1. Students attending elementary school who live 1 1/2 miles or more from school.
  2. Middle school students or sixth grade students who are assigned to a junior high school who live at least 2 1/2 miles from school with no public bus service.
