Technology Services provides a district-wide technology environment to support the district's Mission/Vision/Strategic Priorities and Values and the district's Strategic Goals (In MS Word | In Adobe PDF). We provide network, computer, student and business records, and web services for TUSD.
Extending over 250 square miles, TUSD's voice and data network is one of the largest in the state. The District's private branch exchange (PBX) voice system operates on servers, and with over 17,000 extensions, the District could qualify for its own area code within Arizona. The network provides voice services for the district's +8,000 telephones, including a telephone in every classroom, Enhanced 911, voicemail services, and teleconference bridges, to name a few. Through this network, the district's +23,000 computers connect to the Internet and to central and site servers using wireline and wireless connections. The infrastructure required to support TUSD's voice, data, and video services requires tens of thousands of voice and data drops, hundreds of thousands of miles of infrastructure, and multimillion dollars of equipment.
Technology Services supports over 23,000 computers in labs, classrooms, and offices. Currently TUSD computers use the Windows 2000 or XP operating system and run Microsoft Office 2000 or 2003 and a variety of district-approved educational software. The district's 40 central servers and 250 site servers supply data, file, and, in some cases, application storage. Technology Services also supports the district installation and administration of the Follett library system and the Food Services' computer system.
In 1990, the TUSD Governing Board charged the Information Technologies department (now Technology Services) to develop, administer, and maintain a computer system to standardize and unify student records. In response, the department developed Sonora, the district's student record management system, which was implemented in 1993. During the 2000-2001 school year, Technology Services released Mojave, the web interface for the student records database. Because district funding from the state depends on the correct transmittal of student enrollment and attendance records to SAIS, the Arizona Department of Education's Student Accountability Information System, the Technology Services staff works closely with ADE programmers to ensure accurate transmittal of data and with district site personnel to support their use of Mojave.
TUSD is taking significant steps to increase operational efficiency and has begun the process of upgrading to a new business software system. Sometimes called an ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system, our new Lawson system will provide tools that automate the District's day-to-day business activities: from recruiting and hiring staff, to procuring supplies, to keeping track of employee time, to maintaining asset inventory, to running payroll, to processing employee benefits.
The first module of the District’s new ERP (Lawson) went live on June 6, 2011. This module is called Requisition Center (RQC) and allows the District to submit, process, and approve requisitions for supplies and services electronically. Automating the workflow and approval process in this way streamlines and speeds up the delivery of goods and services to the District. One new feature in particular allows a requester to shop online from a vendor’s website, just like you might buy a book online from Amazon.com.
In addition to RQC, the Finance Suite of applications went live at the change of the Fiscal Year on July 1, 2011. This module supports the District’s General Ledger, Accounts Payable, Student Finance, Asset Management and Grant Financial Management.
Technology Services provides computer assistance to over 7,500 district computer users within the district. The Technology Services Help Desk responds to over 40,000 phone calls per year, addressing questions about email, Mojave, the Internet, and computer applications. District computer users can also find assistance through online interactive demos and documentation produced by Technology Services. These materials cover PeopleSoft, Mojave, Microsoft Office applications, file management, and other computer topics.
TUSD's Internet web site and district intranet are supported by Technology Services. The district web site receives 6,000-7,500 visits daily. The district intranet serves as a clearinghouse of information and resources for district employees. Hundreds of district forms, the district online employment center, the district phone directory, a calendar of events, and online room-reservation forms are among the resources available through the intranet.
