Resource Efficiency Awareness Program

Energy - Conservation, Efficiency, Renewables

Through attending to our use of energy at all levels, we can help the District save energy costs. TUSD has implemented operating procedures and programs to reduce energy consumption throughout the district. (Documents available in PDF)

Computer Energy Use Guidelines
Changing wasteful computer energy use habits saves thousands of dollars a year. For information about cost-saving measures implemented at TUSD, read the Computer Energy Use Guidelines.

Custodian Operating Procedures
By keeping the lighting, heating, and cooling to a minimum when students are not in the school facilities, custodians can help schools to use less energy. For more information, read the Custodial Procedures.

Energy Patrols
Several TUSD schools participate in Tucson Electric Power Company's Energy Patrol program. for more information about this program, see TEP's Energy Patrol web page.

EPA Energy Star School
Top-performing Energy Star Schools cost 40 cents less per square foot to operate than the average school (Source: Energy Star for Schools K-12). For information about Energy Star Schools at TUSD, see EPA's Energy Star Schools.

Photovoltaics for Schools Project
The Photovoltaics for Schools Project includes solar installations at TUSD schools and curricular activities developed for classroom use. Track daily and historic electrical output from TUSD solar sites can now be tracked on Soltrex.

Tucson Solar Schools Project
Working with the Arizona Department of Commerce and the Greater Tucson Coalition of Solar Energy, TUSD began the Tucson Solar Schools Project in March 2002. The project will demonstrate improved student performance at selected Tucson Solar Schools over two years by completing the following objectives:

  1. Install six (6) kW of distributed photovoltaic systems on up to six (6) TUSD schools
  2. Integrate energy education into the curriculum at those schools as a model for other Arizona schools
  3. Promote community education on energy efficiency and applied solar technology
  4. Share data on both the installed PV systems and student performance.

For more information, read the Solar Energy Proposal.

This web site, sponsored by Tucson Electric Power, features lesson plans and information about photovoltaic systems at TUSD schools. Tucson Solar Schools

Alternative Fuels
Using electric and biodiesel vehicles and "Clean Green" school buses, TUSD is helping to improve air quality in Tucson, Arizona.

The "Clean Green" School Bus program, funded by the Arizona School Facilities Board, the Pima Association of Governments, and TUSD, has added alternative fuel buses to TUSD's fleet. For more information, read the CNG School Bus grant proposal.
