Mexican American Student Services

Programs

Our programs use a comprehensive approach to provide an integrated strategy for promoting academic success.

  • Student Support - Prevention and Intervention
The Mexican American Student Services model and its pursuit incorporate both intervention and prevention goals through the creation of a critical consciousness and an academic identity.
  • Curriculum Content Integration
Our curriculum uses a transformative approach. Content about Chicanos/Latinos and their cultural groups are brought from the margin to the center of the curriculum.

The Social Justice Education Project (SJEP)
http://www.socialjusticeproject.org
A two year student led social research program existing in some TUSD Mexican American Student Services American History and American Government classes, were social research is connected with curriculum.

Professional Development
Using a Latino Critical Race Theory framework, our professional development program promotes practices that educators can implement to enhance the academic identity and achievement of all students, with an emphasis on Latino students in particular and students of color in general.

Mexican American Student Services Team - We offer professional development meetings throughout the school year. Each meeting addresses topics through a Chicana/o historical, cultural, and literary perspective.

Mexican American Student Services Summer Institute - This four-day conference provides Chicana/o studies-based lessons and units to implement at all grade levels.

Parent/Community Involvement
Ce-Ollin Parent Encuentros - provide parents with the opportunity to hear children deliver presentations on their intellectual growth and also help parents to develop a foundation for engaging in activities of social justice, social transformation, and educational justice. We focus on the experiences of parents from diverse ethnic backgrounds.
