Testing (Screening and Evaluation) Information

As a parent/legal guardian of an enrolled kindergartner through 7th grade TUSD student, you may request your child to be screened in November and evaluated for possible additional testing in January by signing and returning the permission form below to your school.

Forms must be returned to your child's school. (The deadline for testing during the 2014-2015 school year will be posted in the fall of 2014.)

Eligibility for GATE services is determined by performance on the GATE tests.

La elegibilidad para los servicios de GATE es determinada por el desempeño en las pruebas de GATE. Como padre/tutor legal de un estudiante de kínder hasta el 7mo grado inscrito en TUSD, usted puede solicitar que su hijo(a) sea evaluado(a) en noviembre y para posibles pruebas adicionales en enero firmando y regresando esta forma de permiso (en PDF) a su escuela.

Current Tests

The tests currently used by the GATE department include:

  • Cognitive Abilities Test, grades 1 through 8
  • Raven Test of Progressive Matrices (non-verbal), all grades
  • Otis-Lennon, kindergarten

Test Accommodations

Accommodations for students with IEPs/504s will be reviewed prior to testing. Parents of out of district students who live within TUSD boundaries should contact the GATE office prior to testing so accommodations can be arranged. Students who are pre-emergent or emergent in English will be given a non-verbal assessment.

Make-up Tests

Students who miss the November screening or January testing held in their school will be informed by mail of a make-up testing opportunities that are typically held in late November and April at a central location on Saturday or after school. November screening results are mailed by end of December and January test results are mailed by end of February.

Independent Evaluations

Testing offered by the district is free of charge to parents and guardians. Parents who seek independent evaluations are responsible for the cost of the evaluation.
