Drama in TUSD begins in elementary school as creative drama introduced through opera and drama in the Opening Minds Through the Arts program. Drama programs in middle and high schools are thriving and growing throughout TUSD, allowing students to excel in the skills of speaking, program presentation, and technical aspects of the theatre. These drama programs are an integral part of preparing students for the new conceptual age of creativity in the work place. The transferable skills learned in these programs are simply invaluable.
Drama classes regularly attend student matinees at various theatres in the Tucson community. The Invisible Theatre, Arizona Theatre Company, UA Theatre Department, UApresents as well as Pima Community College have programs for TUSD students that TUSD Fine Arts coordinates and promotes.
Arizona Commission on the Arts (ACA) provides Project Grants for Artists In Residence with matching funds from school districts and assisting funds from individual schools. Each year, several schools apply and receive funding for either a visual or performing artist.
