Important Information for Tucson Unified School District's Homeowners Concerning their 2011 Property Taxes

The Arizona Republic has reported that the Legislature has shifted the financial burden for some school expenditures from the State to homeowners. To see what they reported, read their complete story and comments.

House Bill 2008 (7th Special Session 2010)

The changes made during 2010 Legislative Session that becomes effective this tax year will increase homeowner taxes approximately $70 million statewide. This shift decreases the state's expense and increases the local homeowner's tax bill. The Arizona State Legislature Web site shows how your legislator voted on this bill.

What does all this mean?

The legislative changes will increase the tax bills for owner-occupied property owners in Tucson Unified School District.

Property owners may naturally assume that the school district had control over or made these tax changes. This is not true.

Property owners may also assume that the district's budget benefited from the tax increase. This is also not true. Even though local taxes will increase due to the legislature's actions, Tucson Unified School District will not receive more funding. In fact, Tucson Unified will have a significantly lower budget than the prior year.
