Short-Term Disability

Short-term disability (STD) insurance is an optional benefit offered through the district; it is a private insurance that the employee pays. It is a separate consideration from any type of leave. Employees who are paying the premiums for this insurance should consider submitting the STD Claim Forms to the insurance company. If the doctor verifies the need to be absent, the STD insurance company should continue to pay the employee for up to six months. All benefits-eligible employees are also eligible to apply for long term disability (LTD) insurance benefits. LTD benefits would start at six months of being absent; separate insurance claims forms would need to be filed, preferably well before the six months of being absent. The LTD insurance company works for the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS); therefore, while the employee is receiving LTD benefits, he/she is still accruing points towards retirement.

If you have selected short-term disability through your employee benefits, you can apply for short-term disability.
